Joining Squirrels
Places are limited and offered from our waiting list. Here’s how it works:
- Add your child to the waiting list – it takes two minutes.
- We contact you when a place is coming up and invite you to visit.
- You’ll get a welcome pack, uniform guidance and a start date.
You don’t need any Scouting experience – just a child keen to try new things. Questions? Get in touch.
Join the waiting listSquirrel Scout Promise
The Promise is how every Squirrel – whatever their faith, or none – commits to Scouting’s shared values when they join. There are different wordings, so everyone can make a promise that means something to them.
Activities and badges
Squirrels learn through fun, action-packed sessions built around discovery, play and trying new things, all in a safe, supportive environment. Every week our Drey takes part in a mix of active games, outdoor exploration, creative crafts and hands-on experiments.
What your Squirrel gets up to
- Outdoor and nature exploration: bug hunting, leaf rubbings and puddle jumping, planting seeds and finding out about local wildlife.
- Games and physical play: team games, obstacle courses, circus skills and active play that get everyone moving and build confidence.
- Creative and hands-on activities: crafting, junk modelling, mud and water painting, storytelling and simple science experiments.
- Life skills: practising sharing, making healthy snacks like fruit kebabs, learning about safety and discovering how to look after our local community.
Badges your Squirrel can work towards
Badges celebrate trying new things, learning new skills and exploring the world around them. Alongside the badge they earn for joining, Squirrels can work towards:
- Activity Badges: 12 badges made just for this age group – among them Be Active, Brilliant Builder, Let It Grow, Super Chef, Get Creative, Exciting Experiments, Digital Citizen and Community Impact, plus Air Activities, Local Community, Feeling Good and Storyteller.
- Challenge Awards: broader challenges built up over time, covering outdoor adventure, community and personal progress.
- Chief Scout’s Acorn Award: the highest award a Squirrel can earn – given for completing four Challenge Awards before moving up to Beavers.
- Joining and membership badges: presented when your child makes their Scout Promise at their Investiture.
Moving up
Moving on is a big moment. When your child is ready we make it gentle and exciting:
- We tell you when it’s time to move up – usually around age six.
- Your child visits the Beavers Colony with a leader they know.
- They start with their new Colony and make the Beaver Promise when ready.
Every move is planned with you, so no one is thrown in at the deep end.
