What is Beaver Scouts?
Beavers is Scouting for six to eight year olds – a child’s first taste of real adventure with their friends. Expect outdoor fun, new skills and plenty of badges.
What your Beaver will do
- Cook on a campfire and build dens.
- Go on local adventures, walks and visits.
- Work towards badges and awards with real goals.
- Play wide games and take part in team challenges.
- Make the Beaver Promise and become a proper member of the Colony.

The Promise is how every Beaver – whatever their faith, or none – commits to Scouting’s shared values when they join. There are different wordings, so everyone can make a promise that means something to them.
Activities and badges
Beavers leap into adventure through fun, hands-on weekly sessions built around building confidence, making friends and developing skills for life. Joining a Colony is all about trying new things, exploring the outdoors and discovering the world around them in a warm, welcoming environment.
What your Beaver gets up to
- Outdoor adventure: nature walks, discovering local wildlife, learning basic navigation, sleepovers and their first night away at camp.
- Team games and physical activity: energetic games, sports, obstacle courses and team-building challenges that build resilience and active habits.
- Creative and practical skills: crafting, building models, cooking healthy snacks, performing in shows and learning simple safety and life skills.
- Community and world: helping out in the local community, taking part in eco-friendly projects and learning about different cultures and global issues.
Badges your Beaver can work towards
Badges celebrate learning new skills, stepping out of their comfort zone and helping others. Alongside the badge they earn for joining, Beavers can work towards:
- Activity Badges: a wide range made for this age group – among them Cook, Health and Fitness, Explore and Outdoor Challenge, Experiment, Creative and Environmental Conservation, plus Sports, Digital Citizen, Space, Cyclist and Book Reader.
- Challenge Awards: six challenges earned across their time in Beavers, covering My Adventure, My Outdoor, My World, My Skills, Teamwork and Personal Challenge.
- Chief Scout’s Bronze Award: the highest award a Beaver can earn – given for completing all six Challenge Awards before moving up to Cubs.
- Joining and membership badges: presented when your child makes their Beaver Promise at their Investiture.
Moving up
Moving on is a big moment. When your child is ready we make it gentle and exciting:
- We tell you when it’s time to move up – usually around age eight.
- Your child visits the Cubs group with a leader they know.
- They start with their new Pack and make the Cub Promise when ready.
Every move is planned with you, so no one is thrown in at the deep end.
